Nordic Guidelines for the Production of Accessible EPUB 3

The Nordic Guidelines for the Production of Accessible EPUB 3 is a joint effort between the (mostly) Nordic agencies dedicated to providing accessible literature in different formats to children and adults with various reading impairments or special needs. The guidelines provide an application of EPUB 3 for the purposes of the production of accessible books carried out at the Nordic agencies.

The target audience of these documents is mainly contracted EPUB 3 suppliers, but the guidelines will also be used by staff at the Nordic agencies, other vendors and interested parties, etc.

The Nordic Guidelines are hosted by MTM, the Swedish Agency for Accessible Media.

Available versions of the Nordic Guidelines

2025-1 (latest version)
This document is the most recent version of the Nordic Guidelines, and is based on EPUB 3.3, and the accompanying EPUB Accessibility 1.1 standard.
2020-1
This document is based on EPUB 3.2 and EPUB Accessibility 1.0.
2015-1
This document is based on EPUB 3.0. When these guidelines were created, the Nordic agencies used EPUB 3 as a production format, not as a distribution format targeting end users directly. This affects the overall accessibility of 2015-1 EPUB files.
